A federal identification number, also known as a Federal Tax ID and Employer Identification Number (EIN), is a nine-digit number used in all 50 states for business purposes including tax filing and banking. If you are interested in obtaining a EIN number in Alabama, you can file online at the irs.gov website. Upon submission of your application, you will immediately receive your EIN.
Complete the online application form. You must complete the application in one session. You will not be able to save your application and return later. Once your application has been submitted, you will receive your EIN number immediately. You will be able to open a bank account, file a tax return by mail, and apply for business licenses immediately. It will, however, take several weeks for your EIN number to become a permanent part of the IRS's records. You will not be able to make an electronic payment or file an electronic return until your number has been accepted into the IRS's permanent records.
Click the "Apply for an EIN Online" link in the center of the page. Scroll down the resulting page and click the "Apply Online Now" link. Click the "Begin Application" button to go to the online form.
Navigate to irs.gov. Click on the "Businesses" link in the top menu. Select the "Employee ID Numbers" link under "Businesses Topics" from the left navigation menu.
