The OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) Act is the principle federal law dealing with workplace safety. Prior to the enactment of the OSH Act, there was no significant federal legislation addressing issues concerning the health, safety and welfare of individuals in the workplace.
- The OSH Act was signed into law by President Nixon in 1970 and remains in full force and effect to this day.
- The primary objective of the OSH Act is to protect individuals from recognized hazards in the workplace.
- The OSH Act established the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice.
- Under the OSH Act, a business is defined as any enterprise with employees that "affects commerce." Governmental entities are excluded from the OSH Act.
- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspects workplaces on its own volition and also responds to complaints of violations of the OSH Act.
