When a teenager finally gets that coveted license, it is time for parents to think about adding them to their insurance policy whether they have a car yet or not. It may cost more to add a teenager because they have no driver's history and they are more prone to motor vehicle accidents. In other words, the insurance company views them as a risk.
Refrain from giving your teenager a sports car to drive. The cost of insurance will soar higher and you will be left with the bill. Buy a used car for your teen so that if she encounters any accidents, it will not be to a newer model car. The older the car, the cheaper the insurance costs.
Make sure that your teens take driver education classes. The insurance company may offer additional discounts for this. Call the insurance company to see what driver's education courses they offer discounts for.
Supervise your teenager's driving periodically to test her driving skills before adding her to the insurance policy. Sit in the passenger seat of your car and let your teenager take the driver's seat. Get an idea of how your teen is driving so that you can keep a check on her.
Add the teenager to your current insurance policy to give the teen access to your discounts. Be prepared for your insurance rates to increase tremendously. Talk to your teen about driving safely, maintaining her grades and following the traffic rules.
Discuss how much more the insurance will cost to put her on the policy. Ask her how she would feel about paying that money on her own. This will teach her that a motor vehicle comes with responsibilities.
