Despite the boost in U.S. economy, many industrial employers are still taking a hit on their finances, and still seeking ways to cut cost. Especially now more than ever with staff shortages, and employees going on holiday vacations, or being off sick, work is getting behind. Using temporary services or contracting agencies used to be an option when company revenues were up, however employers simply can't afford to pay extra for temp help. This is especially true for non profit organizations who are still struggling to meet their mission objectives and goals, yet aren't receiving the same level of funding from donations and grants. Many administrative and clerical tasks are getting backed up and or call centers are getting bogged down with calls. Instead of outsourcing clerical work and/or call center work, there are other methods to consider.
In addition, to keep the flu bug from spreading throughout the office, purchase plenty of disinfectant and/or Clorox wipes to wipe down office furniture and equipment. Make sure that the disinfectant and wipes are available not just to maintenance staff, but to all staff to use at their disposal. Keep hand sanitizer at the front desk, break areas, cafeteria or lunch room, and in the bathrooms.
Another option is to establish an adult internship program with your local unemployment office or if your business is in Michigan, the Michigan Works Office. There are a number of auto or plant workers who are receiving unemployment and going back to school. As an employer you can help them to receive experience in a business/administrative office setting, or within the customer service field to add to their resume, in exchange the employer receives a free or low cost customer service worker, office or business assistant. The adult will still be able to receive unemployment, but at the same time gain needed experience to help transition them from being a plant or auto worker to a customer service representative or clerical worker.
Tell your employees not to come to work sick and/or send them home if they are sick. Feel free to check out www.crossconsultant.com to see how your organization can receive professional HR related solutions at a low cost.
There are a few cost free options that might help assist employers to keep afloat. Employers should consider using local college interns. Contact local colleges to see how your agency can be put on the list, or place an ad with the College Career placement center. This is a great opportunity for college students to gain business experience, network, and obtain a good recommendation letter (if they do well).
