A letterhead lends a professional look to your documents. Some documents require letterheads, such as letters of recommendation. This marketing tool reinforces your personal or corporate identity. A letterhead is reusable for various kinds of documents, including letters, invoices, order forms and press releases. It also provides contact information you may forget to include in the body of your document. Though large companies may hire professionals to create letterheads, you can design one for free.
Create a new line and set the font size to 5 to 10 points. Type your contact information and website URL. If you have multiple phone numbers, label them concisely with titles like "home," "main," and "mobile." Label your fax number. Choose an unobtrusive font and color that complements your logo and brand. Experiment with inserting line breaks until you have found something that looks appropriate and does not take up too much space. Insert a small graphic such as a bullet point between contact methods and between the street address and city, if you wish to restrict the number of lines. You may want to use italics or small capitals for your contact information. Make sure what you have designed is easy to read.
Choose a font that reinforces your desired image. Your font could be traditional, professional, whimsical or modern. If your organization is known by its initials or a nickname, use these and type the full name on the next line in a smaller font. Set your name in a bold or attractive color.
Proofread your letterhead carefully. Run a spell-check for errors.
Open a blank word processor document. Create a header. Align the text to the center or left. Insert your logo if you have one, or type your organization or personal name. Set the font size for your name to at least 14 points.
