Running a training class involves more than just teaching the material. Classroom logistics can make or break the experience for everyone. Adequate preparation, double-checking arrangements and establishing ground rules for your participants ensures that your event will proceed as you intend so that your training objectives can be achieved.
Make arrangements for classroom breaks such as lunch or dinner in advance by coordinating with a catering service or restaurant, if that is included in your budget.
Ensure all materials are available in the classroom. Print copies of handouts well in advance of the session. Ensure all presentation and lab equipment is functioning the way it should.
To ensure your students are prepared for the current class, distribute a pre-test in advance to establish what they already know about the material. Display the training objectives so that participants know what to expect from the class.
Plan your day wisely. Establish an agenda and conduct several dry runs to ensure the timing works. If you have co-facilitators, involve them upfront. Document your agenda in a spreadsheet and modify it as needed. Use your modified agenda in subsequent training class offerings to improve how your class runs.
Deal with interruptions in a consistent manner. Handle students who monopolize every discussion by offering to work separately during a break or after class through email or phone.
At the beginning of your training class, establish rules to ensure your class runs smoothly. Discourage the use of notebook computers during your session unless required for notes or research as they can be distracting. Require all phones be set to silent or off to avoid interruptions. Remind participants to be respectful of each other. Encourage each participant to contribute their expertise to discussions and breakout groups. Require all participants to arrive on time and return from breaks promptly.
