A self evaluation can help employees understand what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. Creating self evaluations is an important way to help your business because you will be able to see how employees believe they are doing, as compared to how you know they are doing. Ohio State University Human Resources outlines some steps to making a successful self evaluation for your staff, as does Shelley Cutler, at the FocusGroup in Minneapolis.
Write the numbers 1 through 10 underneath each of the ten daily work points. Include the directions that the employees should circle the number that they feel represents their enthusiasm level for each of the ten points. Ten should be the highest ran and one should be the lowest rank.
Write down the ten main points or ten main goals that the particular employee should have for daily work. Focus on the ten things that you want your employee to be doing during a typical work day.
Start a new section, and list the three main goals that you would like your employee to be meeting on a long term basis. These might include things like increasing sales, increasing customer service recommendations, or increasing the amount of time they spend at work.
Focus on each employee separately, because each job is going to be slightly different, and therefore each employee should have a slightly different self evaluation. This is important if you want them to be successful.
Ask employees to fill out the self evaluation by circling the numbers that best describe their efforts. Simultaneously, fill out your own evaluation of the employee by circling the numbers that you feel best describe their efforts. Compare the two evaluations to get an idea of how well your employee thinks they are doing compared to how you believe they are doing.
Write the numbers 1 through 10 beneath these things, and instruct the employee to circle the number that best describes their efforts for each of those things.
