Decision trees are a written and drawn way of making a decision. The question, or problem you have to solve is written along the trunk of the tree. Each choice you could make becomes a branch of the tree, and each consequence of those choices branch out into other choices and consequences. Pruning a decision tree means erasing decisions that end with consequences you do not like. This process leaves you with the best choices for your decision.
Leave the branch on your paper if the final conclusion is acceptable to you.
Follow that decision through the branches until you reach the final conclusion.
Erase the branch if the final conclusion is not acceptable to you.
Read your completed decision tree one branch at a time. Begin with your original choice, and read what happens if you make a certain decision.
Erase all of the branches that have led to that ending result.
Look through the last branches on your decision tree. Whenever you find a branch that does not seem like something you want, erase it.
