I have a bit of experience with this one. I was a supervisor at a store in my area for about three years. Checking and screening applications by itself is almost like a full time job when you're actually in the process of doing it. But to get the right type of employee it must be done. Below I will expose the immediate red flags you should look for.
Don't accept short answers on applications
People think just filling out an application is enough. They don't understand that the employer wants to know as much as possible before they hire them. If a person can't take the time to properly fill out an application then don't take the time to hire them or to read their application.
Don't accept Felonies
Felonies are obviously a definite no-no. If you find out they have a felony you might as well rip the application up and throw it in the waste basket.
Do they call back?
Check to see which applicants call back to check on the hired status. If their application is good, you can use this to confirm their employment with the company. if their calling back then they probably really want the job.
Watch Those References
Make sure that you call all references that are provided to you on the application also make sure that there are no empty spaces in that section. If their are ask questions. You need to know why they do not have enough references. Many times potential applicants have bad references or give fake contacts. If this is the case you do not want to waste anymore time with these people nip it in the bud fast.
G.E.D
Depending on the job to me a person having a G.E.D might raise red flags, but this is discretionary. It depends on the skill level of the job.
