An EIN, or Employer Identification Number, also known as a Federal Tax ID Number, is a legal requirement used to identify a business. Sole proprietors are not required to use an EIN; however, an EIN is required to open a bank account and is recommended instead of using a social security number.
According to the Data Privacy & Integrity Advisory Committee Report No. 2008-02, "The Employer Identification Number (EIN), if validated, can be instrumental in verifying the identity of an organization. However, validating the EIN through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) database is challenging due to the legislative constraints on the use of the data." Fortunately, private businesses are able to bridge this gap easily and serve as the link to verify an EIN number for a business.
Select an online company that specializes in EIN number searches for businesses. Determine if you need to search many EIN numbers or just a few a year. Select the plan that suits your needs the best. Then fill out the web forms and enter the prospective EIN numbers to complete the search. The results for these searches are almost instantaneous.
Go to your state's business license website, which can usually be found in a menu or through a search box on your state, city or county's website. Check the public business records to see if the EIN and the business name are valid.
Write down the EIN and the exact name of the business and/or business owners for the EIN number you need to verify. If you do not have an EIN to start the verification process, try to find the number on the company's business cards, invoices or by searching your state's public records.
