Following some simple safety guidelines will help keep you and your colleagues safe in the workplace.
- Securityworld.com suggests closing file cabinet drawers after using them so they do not create a tripping hazard. Be sure to cover extension cords that cross walkways. Do not leave boxes out where people can trip over them.
- The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there are more than 5,000 deaths associated with workplace accidents each year, and 18% of them are the result of contact with workplace equipment or items left out where they shouldn't be.
- Store sharp objects properly. Secure the blade on a board-style paper cutter before putting it away. Keep scissors blade-down in bins. Put all sharp tools back in their place when you are done using them.
- Rude and unprofessional behavior affects the productivity of others. Avoid using foul language or shouting in the workplace as your words may be heard in your colleagues' phone conversations. Do not provoke situations of workplace violence with rude or inappropriate behavior.
- If you take something from a company first aid kit and notice the kit is low on supplies, tell a manager so the items can be replenished. Always put safety equipment and safety kits back where they belong so that others know where to get them when they need them.
