EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program. It's a program offered by employers free of cost to their employees. It includes various counseling sessions to assist employees with problems in their personal lives or in the workplace.
- Employers want their employees focusing on their jobs instead on other problems they may be facing. By offering an EAP program, the employees can receive the counseling they need in order to give their full attention to their jobs.
- EAP programs are completely free to the employee. They are also confidential. The employer does not receive a list of attendees. All counseling sessions are between the employee and the counselor only. It may significantly help an employee's mental health at work and home.
- The EAP program is meant to touch upon anything tragic that could occur in a person's life. It offers counseling for death in the family, marital problems, substance abuse, financial, legal, emotional, stress and even elder care.
- According to EAPprograms.com, "EAP counselors typically are experienced in dealing with problems in substance abuse, behavioral health, relationships, work place and numerous social, financial and legal situations that plague all of us at one time or another." If counselors are not able to help, they can refer the employee to other professionals.
- As soon as you begin to feel stressed from a problem in your life, you should make the call. It's better to talk through the issue early on instead of ignoring it as it will only get worse.
