State tax ID numbers are unique tax identification numbers required to do business in states that collect personal income taxes, even if the business does not have any employees. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, New Hampshire and Tennessee do not collect personal income taxes. For these states, only the federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) is used. California has stricter regulations and also requires college clubs, fraternities, sororities and households that employ a household worker to obtain a state tax ID number.
File an application for a state tax ID number using the forms on your state's web portal. Most states allow these forms to be filled out and submitted online. The information you will need to complete the application includes the business name, physical address (P.O. Boxes are not accepted as a principal address), business structure (such as S-Corp or LLC), member names and number of employees.
Attain a federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) if you do not already have one. Having a FEIN is a prerequisite to filing for a state tax ID number. To apply for an FEIN, contact the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933. If you are unable to call, you may also file online with the IRS. Determine whether or not you will need to obtain a state tax ID number. Do this by checking with your Secretary of State. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has compiled a list of links to each state's government website. Find a link in Resources.
