" Just to clarify.we haven't made an album and this is not the start of yet another boring big sell campaign. When David & I recorded this track it was the only thing EMI would pay for us to do, and we decided not to try and impss but to do what we wanted and ignore all their advice. They dropped us without hearing it.I always promised we would put this out someday somehow, so Ifinished it off alone and pledged to pss up afew copies on my own. That was my dream, and Rough Trade kindly intervened and offered to take the burden off my hands. The dream remains as deliberately purist as the song: There is no sleeve because we have nothing to say that isn't in the song. There are no credits because we don't owe anybody anything. There is no video because they are always rubbish. There is no live version because Idon't have 3drummers.To go against the purist's opinion, there can be no purer way of psenting apiece of music than on aformat that you physically can't touch. And let's face it, they sound alright and if you say otherwise you're boring. It 's my baby.Take her or leave her, I don't care, but she's alady all the same. "-Bernard Butler.
While not hitting former heights, 'Speed'does enough to suggest that Butler could well be better off returning to McAlmont than buddying up with Brett Anderson in The Tears again.
'Speed', a track rejected by EMI back in 2003 prior to the duo parting company with both the label and each other, sees McAlmont keep the pitch slightly lower than before-for the most part at least-and while it lacks any definable chorus , that voice, and Bernard Butler's ever excellent axework keeps the song barrelling along nicely, albeit in aslightly mid-tempo way.Not 'speedy'then, but it still builds to asuitably anthemic climax-a catchy chant of "keep moving". < br /> 2009-04-26 All about "Speed" 1.Upon hearing Speed, McAlmont & Butler's then record company, EMI, weren't too happy. The track resulted in them being dropped and only now, three years later, has it been picked up for release through Rough Trade. One can assume the cloth-eared suits thought it didn't sound enough like Coldplay, for this is adecent, rather soulful tune.Against aslow drumbeat and lush backing, David McAlmont's voice soars beautifully. So kind of what you 'd expect, if more subdued than Yes.Be glad Speed was rescued.
