Fall is a great time to clean out the closets and dig out your old stuff that may be a treasure to someone else. To get the most money out of your things and your time, make sure your follow these tips and know what to avoid.
Be willing to negotiate. If someone wants two sets of salt and pepper shakers for a buck instead of two, just be glad you sold it. Remember, you're not in the yard sale game to make a fortune on each sale, but to make many sales.
Price everything. People aren't as willing to negeotate if they have to ask for prices, so makes sure they have something to start with. Use pre-priced stickers or making tape and marker, just make it clear. Use signs if similar items have the same price, such as books or baby clothes. Don't forget to be realistic about it; would you pay twenty bucks for a used coffee maker?
Staging your area is key. Have everything on tables and keep them close enough together so that it is easy to move between tables, but roomy enough to avoid running into fellow shoppers. Fold or hang clothes neatly and divide into categories for easy shopping. Keep similar items together on tables. Use sheets to cover tables and give a nicer appearance. Keep the cashier table at the front, so people walk past it going in or out. Keep larger items towards the back, so you aren't blocking anything.
Advertise! No one is buying if they don't know you are selling. Run an ad in the local paper and list major items, such as fitness equipment, kitchen wares or kids items. Consider tacking up fliers at popular locations and hanging up signs the day before and the day of the sale. Make signs large (I mean HUGE letters) and visible. A bright back ground and black marker will work. Make it brief; just list your sale and the time and place. People should be able to read it driving past at a normal speed.
Try to have your sale visible from the street. Side or backyards hide sale items and may make people think you have less to sell or things that aren't worth looking for.
