In the golden state of California, employees always get paid. Generous salary laws entitle employees to earn considerable rewards for the labor they give to the business.
- State law requires employers pay at least a minimum wage that is higher than the federal minimum, $8 an hour in 2008. Employees in their first 160 hours can qualify for an 85 percent minimum rate designed for the work-learning period.
- The standard work hours are eight in a day and 40 in one week. Unless you are exempt, the employer pays 1 1/2 times your regular rate for hours above the standard and double for hours above 12 in a day.
- Employees pay for at least a 30-minute meal period every five hours. You can take a paid 10-minute rest break every four hours.
- Employees have a right to keep tips and gratuities, free from any attempt to take them by the business. And tips cannot count toward a minimum wage.
- Employees can ask the employer to reimburse them for work expenses.
