Devastating consequences are now inevitable due to climate change and the failure of governments around the world to adequately address greenhouse gas emissions. Climate-related disasters will impact all of us within our lifetimes. More importantly, our children and grandchildren will need to know how to live in this unpredictable new world that we are bequeathing them. Though we can no longer avoid some of the worst impacts of climate change, we can take steps to endure and survive in our increasingly harsh environment. Consider the following aspects of climate change, think carefully, and take action where appropriate.
Think Economically. Another unpleasant truth of life is that the wealthy always survive disaster far better than the poor. Do what you can to access increased income and you stand a much better chance of being able to secure the necessary items to survive as conditions decline.
Think Geographically. Disastrous coastal flooding has already begun among many of the islands of the Pacific Ocean and along low-lying coasts, such as that of Bangladesh. This trend will continue and worsen. Every nation on this planet with a coastline will be negatively impacted. Likewise, countries closer to the equator can be expected to grow much hotter. Finally, as weather patterns change, present day agricultural regions can be expected to suffer significant droughts leading to crop failure and top soil erosion. Now is the time to move and to establish yourself in an area expected to remain habitable before international and national policies change to reflect mass human migrations. In other words, it is far better in the long run to already be a citizen and a neighbor of people than it is to be seen as an immigrant or a refugee. It's a harsh fact that, while unpleasant, has to be considered.
Think Security. What skills do you need to acquire to be able to defend yourself and your resources? In the decades to come, mass human migrations and popular discontent leading to increased crime will stretch law enforcement agencies ability to effectively respond. Eventually, they will be overwhelmed. The inevitable rise of martial law will nonetheless be incapable of responding to every situation that occurs. You need to be able to protect yourself in case help can't arrive.
Think Resources. Ask yourself: How can I consume less? How can I live more efficiently? What can I do to generate my own energy, food, etc? What can I do to offset or reduce my carbon footprint? Those who learn the lesson of living on less will do the best in the decades to come.
Think Politically. While a mass extinction of various animal and plant species is already in progress, and drastic negative consequences for human civilization and population can no longer be avoided; it is not too late to avoid the complete annihilation of our species and many of those with whom we share this planet. Individual action to reduce consumption and pollution are important. However, the chief contributors of greenhouse gas emissions are industrial facilities. Now is the time to take urgent political action: write or call your elected officials. Visit their offices. Make your voice heard. Demand robust mandatory controls of industrial emissions. Demand more efficient energy production. You can make a difference.
Think Multi-Generationally. What skills do you need to learn now so that you can teach them to your children and grandchildren later? What actions can you take now to ensure, to the best of your ability, their survival in the future? They will need to learn how to live in a world of drastically limited resources. If they don't have the ability to produce many of the things they need for themselves; they won't make it. You can save them so much hardship by preparing now for what they will need to know later.
