Employee attendance can be hard to tackle sometimes. Otherwise good employees can become problematic by just not showing up to work, showing up late, or taking vacation days without the proper notification. Here are some tips to help improve employee attendance in the workplace:
Don't just threaten- act. It's important you start acting on your new policies immediately. Do not show favorites. If your top violator is your top salesperson, penalize him/her just like anyone else.
Stress the importance of being to work every day and on time. Perhaps the previous supervisor set a bad precedence. Whatever the reason may be, it's important you lay down the law with all employees. Send out an email reminder of a change in procedure and/or speak to employees in groups or individually. Make them aware of the new policies and the actions that will be taken if the rules are not followed correctly.
Give recognition and/or rewards for those who have good attendance or tardy records. Develop a system that will reward good behavior. Perhaps give a cash back bonus for unused vacation or sick time. Rewards do not have to be monetary. Show employees you appreciate your help by taking them out to lunch, supplying morning coffee, or a "employee of the month" parking space.
Identify the underlining issue. Is this a recurring problem with just one employee or is it a company-wide problem? What caused employees to think this is acceptable behavior? Are you, yourself, setting a good example? These are all questions that you have to ask yourself. If it's a recurring problem with the same employee, take them aside and discuss the issue with them face-to-face. It's important to document the issue and have HR representatives present.
