Do you have a problem with employees not working to their full potential? The issue is especially apparent when previously hard working employees have become lackadaisical in their work. Perhaps the downturn in the economy is taking an affect on attitudes and affecting company morale and motivation. Or, maybe it's a personal issue with the employee. Or, could it be that you are not leading by example? There are many reasons why employee performance could be low—but now it's your job to fix it. Read on to learn how to improve performance in your employee's today:
Measure performance. Now that you've set your goals, it's important to measure the progress. Sometimes all you need to do to increase performance is to instill a little bit of friendly competition amongst co-workers. No one wants to be the bottom feeder in the workplace food chain. Posting performance will ensure that everyone will try their hardest to try to gain public accolades.
Set performance goals. Goal setting may seem like a waste of time, but it actually works. Have (attainable) written goals for the various departments and hold them accountable. No sense in setting goals if they don't mean anything! Have continuous reviews to mark progress and discuss action steps to reach each goal.
Lead by example. No one will work hard for a boss who doesn't work hard themselves. Show up on time, be diligent, and set a good example.
Identify the issue. What is causing the decrease in performance? Is motivation and morale low? Speak with specific employees and ask for honest feedback. Many times management is not aware of underlining issues since they are not on the front line as much as the everyday workers. Maybe it's a personal problem with one of your employees specifically- if so, a separation of personal and professional life may have to be discussed. No matter what the problem, you can't possibly solve it without knowing what it is.
Have an open door policy. Accept suggestions and implement them. Be open to all ideas that will make processes more efficient.
