How to Plan Your Business

Many of today's best businesses were started during tough economic times. If you have an idea that you have been kicking around for a while, it may be just the right time to get started. Don't worry though, there is help out there. There are business development offices all across the country who are there to help.

3. Call the city, county, or state. Be sure to call your local city or county office to see what licenses or permits may be required.

2. Take the time to make a list. It's important to write out everything that you will need to start your business. It's important to make sure that you can reasonably obtain everything on your list. In today's market it can be tough to get a loan so don't be afraid to start small and build your business.

4. Ask for help. Go to http://www.asbdc-us.org and search for the Small Business Development Center in your area. They are state funded offices all across America that provide business consulting for small companies. Its not free but you have already paid for it in your taxes and wont have to pay any fees.

1. Be sure your business fills a need. Just about everyone, who wants to start a business, has an idea that they are sure will make money. Just remember that in order for a business to be successful it needs to fill a need. If what you plan to sell is more of a want than a need, don't worry with a little creative marketing you can convince people they need anything.

6. Just get started. I do business consulting for a living and most people are what we in the industry call "tire kickers". You know all talk and no action. Don't jump in blind, but at some point you need to jump in!

5. Avoid common pitfalls. Learn from the many people who have gone before you and don't make the same mistakes. Just search top mistakes made in business and you'll have plenty to read.
