One of the most popular Ethernet barcode scanners is the German SICK brand that uses SOPAS ET software. Laser scanners operate by capturing light via a reading window. The device, which houses the laser scanner and the electronics in an industrial-strength housing, sends the signal to the PC via an Ethernet cable, similar to the kind you'd find in a regular office network
Connect the data interface. In this case we want to use a 10/100 MBit/s Ethernet connection---as opposed to a more usual direct connection via the PC's serial interface port. Plug the cable that runs from the scanner into the Ethernet jack on the back of the PC.
Follow the prompts to install the software. Turn the PC off when the process has completed.
Switch on the power supply to the scanner. The scanner will perform a self-test.
Start the PC and insert the installation CD. The software installation should start automatically, but if it doesn't, then you could type "steup.exe" in the Run dialog box. Just browse for your CD drive.
Configure the Ethernet. From the Tools menu in the software, choose Connection Wizard. Check the box for Enable IP Communication when the Internet Protocol/IP box comes up and then click the "Add" button. Enter the IP address of the scanner and confirm it by pressing "OK" in the dialog window. The dialog window will close and the new entry will appear in the IP Address Configuration list. Click "OK."
Switch the PC on and start the software. The configuration software will start. Select "Create a New Project" in the dialog window that will come up. Press "OK." Click on "Configuration" in the Scan Assistant area. The Scan Wizard will appear. Follow the prompts.
