Size Standards for NAICS Codes

The NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) replaced the Standard Industrial Classification system. Size standards based on NAICS provide more opportunities for small businesses to participate in Federal programs that give preference to small businesses.

The Federal Government is the largest consumer of goods and services in the United States. The Small Business Administration was designed to aid small businesses in doing business with the United States and all other levels of government. There are several advantages of being classified as a small business including receiving preference on loans, set aside bids, and special projects and grants.

To determine whether a business classifies as small, the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was developed as general guidelines and rules.
