Shipping services may calculate shipping cost based on dimensional weight, a measure that accounts for a package's density as well as its volume. UPS considers dimensional weight for packages shipped by ground with volume over 5,184 cubic inches and for all packages shipped by air (Reference 1). Depending on the destination, USPS uses dimensional weight calculations for Priority Mail and Parcel Post packages over one cubic foot in volume (Reference 2).
Divide the cubic size by 194 to obtain the dimensional weight. In our example, 1,000/194 = 5.2.
Determine the package's cubic size. Measure the length, height, and width of the package, rounding each to the nearest inch. For example, 19.25 inches rounds down to 19 inches, while 19.75 inches rounds up to 20 inches. Multiply the length, height and width together. For example, if your package measures 20 inches x 5 inches x 10 inches, then its cubic size is 20 x 5 x 10 = 1,000 cubic inches.
Round Step 3 up to the nearest whole number. In our example, 5.2 rounds up to a dimensional weight of 6.
Weigh the package, rounding up to the next pound. For example, round 10 pounds, 3 ounces up to 11 pounds.
