Starting your own business can be difficult and figuring out the government hoops to jump through can make the process even more difficult. I recently formed my own LLC situated in Reno, Nevada and I offer my experience to help you along.
If your LLC is going to be serving food, providing financial services, etc you will need to find out what special licensing or inspections you will need to pass before being able to apply for your business license in the City of Reno. You can check out their website or call for more information.
After your LLC has been approved by the Secretary of State, you will have 30 days to fill out the annual list of managers or members. Make sure you do this as the late fee is high, more than twice what the fee is originally. Learn from my mistake!
You do not need to wait for the annual list of managers or members to clear with the Secretary of State before filling for your City of Reno business license. This is located in downtown Reno, in front of the ice skating rink, and parking is free at the CalNeva which is right next door. The form for the City of Reno takes a little more time to fill out as it is much more in depth. Some of the questions asked are parcel number for the lot that your business will be on, including home offices. Also, they asked for a drawing of the home office space used in your house. Not very difficult, but I was surprised when I found those!
The first step is to fill out the paperwork with the Secretary of State. You can print the form online and mail it in, or drive to their office in Carson City. I'd recommend the latter if you're pressed for time to open since it took only a week or two for the paperwork to become official.
If you are selling goods that are taxable, you will need to register with Nevada Department of Taxation. As my services are not taxable, I did not have to do this step and am not sure of all the details. I do know that you can do most of this online.
You will not need to file a Fictitious Name for your business because you are considered a legal entity.
