Garage Sales are Failing for Many. They are a great deal of work, and they are not paying out like they used to.
You need an edge to set you apart from the rest and yet control advertising costs.
Many Newspapers are running specials, such as a free merchandise classified if the item is valued under $500 (or something similar)
Newspapers are really trying to drum up sales of their papers in this down economy. One way they've been doing this is attempting to keep their paper full of advertisements in their classified sections.
Utilize this tool! Place a bunch of individual ads the week just before your sale.
Example: Brown Leather Sofa. Excellent Cond. $425.00 (insert phone #)
Kitchen aide mixer - well cared for - clean $75.00 (insert phone #)
Craftsmen Tool Cabinet - Well Care for - $62.00 (insert phone #)
When prospective buyers call you about one of those ads, let them know you have decided to have a garage sale on Saturday because you have so many tools and yard items. We are advertising the sale to start at 8a.m. but if you arrive at 7:30, I will let you in.
No, I'm sorry, I decided to include it in the sale, as I've decided to sell the occasional tables and lots of other stuff.

You will bring in a bunch of extra customers for the day of your sale.

ALL PRICE RIGHT TO SELL FAST!
Go to Wal-Mart & pick up sufficient price tags. You want to price everything at even dollar amounts, or twenty five cent increments.
Here are some example of price points that I have found work best at Estate and Garage Sales:
$12.00, $11.00, $9.00, $8.00, $7.00, $6.00 (instead of $5.00 or $10.00)
.25 or .75 instead of 10 cents
$1.25 or $.75 instead of $1.00
$2.25 or $2.75 instead of $2.00
$3.25 or $3.75 instead of $3.00
You get the idea. This way you even have a little wiggle room to negotiate and people LOVE to quibble. This way everyone feels good that they got you to come down a quarter (25 cents), while you are happy because the actual sale price you wanted on the item was $3.00, you had it priced at $3.75 and you ended up negotiating to a final selling price of $3.25.
Don't make them work too hard at all for the discount, and they will go back to find more stuff to buy.
This works much bette r than telling people to "make an offer". Buyers hear that so much, and it is a sign of desperation on your part, so it is a total turn off. Instead, they pick up or look at something that is priced $4.75 and start to put it down, just say loud enough for everyone to hear, "I'll take $4.25 for that". If they try to get any more off, just smile and say, "you're killin' me" and say "alright, sure". They are thrilled and you just sold something for $4.00 that was what you wanted in the first place.
and so on.
Set up your garage using free banquet tables borrowed from your church (don't pay rental fee, but have professional and clean look to your sale), put flat solid color sheets on the tables for appearance.
You don't want a bunch of mismatched folding tables or stuff laying all over the floor.
