The IT department at your work can be your best friend or a major source of frustration. Follow these tips for getting quick and helpful responses from the techies down the hall.
Tell your tech exactly what you have done. Stop and think before you call and write down anything that you have recently installed or changed on your computer. Letting them know as much detail as possible will help solve your problem quickly.
Do some prep work. First make sure things are plugged in (I know it sounds silly but I have been on many a tech call where I simply had to plug something in). Do some simple troubleshooting. If you don't know how check online for simple fixes for your own problem.
Once they solve your problem thank them with a sincere thanks. Follow up with a thank you email or a small gift (like candy or a small gift card) if they spent a long time or unraveled a complicated problem. Everyone likes to be appreciated.
Remember their names.
People love it when you remember their names. This small courtesy is for everyone, but especially for people who's help you require.
Be realistic about time frames. Give as much notice as possible for fixing your problem. For example, if you are giving a presentation on Friday, set up all of the equipment that you will need on Wednesday afternoon. That way you will have all day Thursday to sort out any problems. IT people hate nothing more than being called in at the last minute when everyone is frantic and being asked to make it work.
If you think that your IT department did a great job or went above and beyond the call of duty then make it a point to let their boss know. A good word from customers goes a long way toward a promotion or a bonus or just a pat on the back from the boss.
