Raising a child to be a business owner is not as hard as it sounds as a matter of fact it is pretty easy as well as fun. It is the parent's role to encourage a child to think out side the box as oppose to fitting into the typical go-to-college-get-a-good-job type thing. I am a big believer that every child should go to college but against the mentality that you need a job to be successful. Could it be possible that raising a child to get a degree to get a job is setting them up for failure? Is job security really secure? Don't chance it with your child's future. Here are some fun things that can get your child thinking like a successful business owner.
Play piggy bank – Get three piggy banks from an arts & craft store or make them from scratch and dress them in funny costumes. Set up one piggy bank for savings, one piggy bank for re-investing and one for giving. Sing funny songs when it is time to put money in each of the banks
Let them hold lemonade sales. This is a chance to teach them customer interaction, sales, and organization. Make it fun by allowing them to put stickers on the cups and dress up the stand with pictures and helium balloons.
When you learn something about investing, budgeting, and record keeping. Don't leave them out of the learning loop. Share with them what you've learned and have little quizzes. When they get an answer right. Reward them with a piece of candy.
Remember we want to encourage not force. Teach your child the value of a dollar by letting them do things around the house to earn something they may want like a new toy.
Nurture whatever they have a passion for. If you have not noticed anything then try suggesting different things they can do to raise money. Here are some ideas:
- Buy candy wholesale and let them sale it in the neighborhood or even at your neighborhood grocery store.
- Get them in a school program like girl or boy scouts. Support them and give them tips in cookie sales.
- Get some shirts printed for them. Shirt sales could go toward college fund put a picture of them on the t-shirt!
