If you are moving your office from one place to another you will need to carefully package your office machines and other equipment. Improperly moving office equipment like copiers and laser printers can seriously damage them, and that improper handling could also void your warranty. Fortunately there are some simple steps you can take to make sure your expensive laser printers make it to their new home in one piece.
Tape all of the doors shut. The doors of the laser printer could become damaged during shipment if they are not secured, as can the sensors that tell the printer a door is ajar. Before you move your printer be sure to securely tape each of the doors, including the toner cartridge door, the fuser door and all other doors. Also be sure to remove any paper from the paper trays and tape those drawers securely shut as well.
Remove the fuser cartridge. Laser printers use a fuser cartridge to fuse the ink to the paper, and it is important to remove this cartridge as well. Like the toner cartridge, the fuser could potentially leak into the printer during shipment, resulting in an expensive and unnecessary repair. Check the manual that came with your printer for the location of the fuser – most of the time it is located in the side opposite the toner cartridge.
Carefully lift the printer off of its current location and onto a pallet. Moving a large laser printer is at least a two man operation, so don't be afraid to ask for help. Once the printer is in place on the pallet double-check that the toner and fuser cartridges have been removed, and that all doors and paper trays have been securely taped shut. Use heavy duty straps to strap the printer to the pallet, and use a pallet jack to move the printer from the building and onto the truck that will take it to its new home.
Remove the toner cartridge from the printer. If the toner cartridge remains in the printer during shipment it is likely to leak, and that will leave toner residue all over the inside of your printer. Cleaning toner from the interior of a laser printer is a painstaking and time consuming process, and in many cases you will need to hire a printer repair expert to do the job. So save yourself a lot of time and trouble by removing the toner cartridge before you do anything else.
