Moving an entire household of furniture and appliances can be an unpleasant task. Heavy items such as sofa beds, armoires, washers, dryers and refrigerators are usually the most troublesome items to move because of their weight. Refrigerators are also tricky to move because of their interior components. Refrigerators have coolant systems and compressors that, after use, can be full of water and can be easily damaged by improper transportation. With a little know-how, a few basic steps and tools, anyone can properly move their refrigerator.
Transport the unit using a dolly (if no wheels are present on the refrigerator). Keep the unit upright while moving it to your transportation vehicle or trailer.
Take out any shelves or drawers and disconnect the ice maker (if applicable). Tape the doors shut on the refrigerator and freezer.
Place the refrigerator upright and tie it in place securely with rope. Ensure the unit is tied securely; you do not want the unit to tip or jostle around while in transit or the compressor may be damaged.
Turn the refrigerator off and remove all contents. Allow the refrigerator to defrost for 24 hours and remove the drain pan from underneath the unit.
Allow one hour to pass before turning the refrigerator back on to allow any water to settle or drain out completely. If the unit was transported on its side rather than upright, allow 24 hours before turning the unit back on.
