Using a fax machine to transmit documents can be useful if you need the document to be sent quickly, or if it needs to travel a great distance. To send a fax to Australia from the United States, you will need to use several international dialing codes that will successfully route your fax. These codes will ensure your fax reaches the appropriate destination.
Dial "011," the country code of the United States, to dial outside of the country. This will indicate that your call is international.
Insert the documents to be faxed into the machine. Typically, the documents will need to be placed face down and upside-down into the feed tray.
Dial "61," which is the international country code for Australia.
Locate a fax machine that is connected to a phone line with international calling capabilities. If your home fax machine is unable to dial internationally, visit an office supply or printing business that offers fax services.
Dial the eight-digit telephone number and press "Send." Check the fax machine for confirmation that your fax was successfully received in Australia.
Dial the city code based on your recipient's location. Use the International Direct Dial website (see Resources section) to determine the appropriate city code for your recipient.
