Barcode scanners range from laser to wireless models. Connection options can include USB and Bluetooth. The best handheld laser barcode scanners can scan barcodes up to 29 inches away. Omni-directional scanners can add to the operator's efficiency. Some base stations can communicate with up to seven Bluetooth scanners at any one time. There are scanners that can transmit data up to 160 feet. Options include stands for hands-free operation.
Attach the power supply to the connector in the Y and plug the power supply into the wall.
Connect the other end of the cable to the host. One of the best ways of connecting to the host is to use a keyboard wedge. It's like hijacking the keyboard's connectivity. The cable from the keyboard goes to a female DIN attached to a Y cable. The scanner connects to the other arm of the Y and the Y plugs into the computer via a male DIN. The scanner translates the barcode into key strokes and sends the signal to the computer as such.
Select "Keyboard Wedge Type" and keyboard country code by scanning the appropriate barcode in the manual. Make sure all the connections are secure.
Connect the interface cable. Insert the cable's modular connector clip into the cable interface port on the bottom of the scanner handle. It connects a bit like plugging a phone into a phone jack. Give the cable a little tug to make sure it's connected securely.
Set the user preferences. As one might expect, the user preferences are also set with barcodes. Use the manual to find the page for the element you want to change. Setting the beep volume is an example. Just scan the appropriate code.
Aim the scanner at the barcode and press the trigger. The scanner will beep when it scans successfully.
