An end mill is a tool used by a milling machine to make a specific cut. End mills have multiple uses and perform many jobs.
- End mills only come in two different types. They are either single or double ended.
- One end of a single-ended end mill is used for drilling, and the other end holds the end mill in the tooling holder, which is on the milling machine itself.
- Double-ended end mills have two ends that are usable for drilling. Once one end becomes useless and dull, the end mill can be reversed so that its dull side is attached to the milling machine.
- End mills are mostly made up of carbide steels and their cutting surfaces are often entirely made up of carbides. It is not uncommon for end mills to have a thin titanium nitrate coating .
- Perhaps the most versatile machine in just about any shop, an end mill on a milling machine can perform many tasks. While they cannot cut square holes, end mills can cut blind holes, bevel edges, flat edges, make holes and create cylinders.
