Changing the toner cartridge in a copier used to be a harrowing experience and usually needed to be done on the day you wore your best white shirt to the office. In many modern copiers, however, the procedure to change the cartridge has been simplified, and improvements have been made to the cartridge itself so that toner mishaps don't happen nearly as often although they do still occur. When toner gets on your clothes during a toner cartridge mishap, remove the toner with the prompt and correct course of action.
Wash the garment as soon as possible. Wash in a cold water cycle using a laundry detergent formulated for cold water. Check the area on the garment where the toner was to be certain you have removed it all before putting the garment in the dryer. Put the garment through another cold water wash cycle if the toner is still on the fabric.
Remove the garment as soon as practically possible. Wash your skin where the toner touched with hand soap and warm water. Dry with a towel or paper towel.
Notify the dry cleaner of copier toner on the garment if the garment is not washable and must be dry cleaned. Inform the dry cleaner that the toner is set with heat and cannot be cleaned with methods that will heat the garment during cleaning.
Gently brush the area of your clothes that has the copier toner on it. Brush with a cloth or paper towel. Do not rub the toner. Rubbing it will grind it into the fabric. Instead brush the garment lightly with a swatting motion to remove as much of the toner as possible.
