If you are like most people these days, you get far more junk mail than you desire. In fact, the average adult receives more than 40 pounds of junk mail each year! Most of that ends up in landfills, of course. Not only is junk mail bad for the environment, it costs money to dispose of it and it takes you time to sort through it, open it, and deal with it in whatever way you choose.
When you provide your name and address to a business, such as when you subscribe to a magazine or fill out a warranty card for something you've purchased, write the words "please do not rent, sell, or trade my name or address" on the card. If you ask them not to, they are not supposed to rent or sell or trade your information. This can greatly cut down on the amount of junk mail you receive.
To stop receiving credit card solicitations in the mail, simply call 1-888-567-8688 (that's 888-5OPT-OUT) and provide your name and address. You can ask to be removed from credit card mailing lists for five years or forever.
When you do receive junk mail, you can call the 1-800 number on the junk mail (most offers will include a 1-800 number) and ask to be removed from their mailing list. If there is no 1-800 number, you can always write to the address provided on the junk mail and ask in writing to be removed from their mailing this. That way you will not continue getting junk mail from that business.
Write a letter to the Direct Marketing Association at:
Direct Marketing Association
Mail Preference Service
P.O. Box 643
Carmel, NY 10512
and ask that your name and address be removed from national mailing lists. Make sure to include your full name and address in your letter, of course. Understand that this will not stop all junk mail, but it will greatly reduce the amount of junk mail you receive.
