In any social system where a hierarchical structure is to be followed, there is a charter. A charter serves as a collection of laws, rules, rights and freedoms to be granted and used by members of the system, and is designed to allow for peaceful interactions throughout the community. By means of a charter, each individual belonging to the system enjoys equality, as he and the other members receive the same amount of freedoms, while only having to follow one set of established rules.
- The main purpose of a charter is to provide a sense of organization between those who run the system and those who live within the same system. In the realm of politics, charters are used to outline the rights and privileges of the people living in an established state. The charter also outlines the freedoms that must be surrendered in order to receive protection against security threats and use public utilities.
- One of the most famous charters in history is the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta is often referred to as "The Great Charter," laying out the foundation for English civil liberty. The charter was then used by several cultures and civilizations going forward, serving as a basis to lay out the civil rights of a society's people.
- It would be difficult for any social organization to work without a charter, as it sets all of the rules and regulations of the different aspects of a group, beginning with general rules, freedoms and privileges, offenses and corresponding sanctions, and finance and logistics. Charters are designed to be all-encompassing, and have the ability to respond to various situations, which may take place amongst the people or parties involved in it.
- There are many types of charters used on both private and public sector, and while they follow almost the same pattern of structure, they vary slightly in goals. Examples of charters common in the realm of politics include international charters, which are used on treaties that tie up a number of state. City and municipal charters, meanwhile, are used in public administration to provide specific rules and regulations to be followed by the citizens of the given territories. Project charters, on the other hand, refer to the terms and conditions agreed upon by two or more parties who are to embark in a business partnership.
- Using a charter is important for any established project or organization, as it serves as the guidelines to which group members can refer to in times of conflict. The people involved in a project can find resolve issues in case they arrive at misunderstandings, while charters used for public obedience detail an individual's level of freedom, and at what point could he or she be apprehended by the authorities in the case that they begin to offend the law.
