With the rapid expansion of the Internet in all realms of business, many small businesses add websites everyday. Many of these businesses have websites that have the ability for people to become members to the site. Membership type sites allow members to access certain information not available to the regular public. There are many ways to build this type of site; however, few are as easy as using a pre-built content management system. There are several on the market and few are free; although not all as easy to install and use as Joomla.
Create a folder on the desktop named Joomla. This is the folder that the package contents should be unzipped to.
Download the latest version of Joomla from the Internet.
Unzip the contents of the package to the Joomla folder on the desktop. These are the files that will be uploaded to the Internet.
Check the minimum system requirements for the Joomla package. This information is found in the installation manual. (Install manual Page 9) Most of the major web hosting companies are compatible with Joomla---check with your hosting company to make sure.
Install the product on the Internet. If the website is new and these are the only files, then go to the correct address for the website. If there is already an active website where the files were uploaded in step 5, then go to the address of the website with /joomla added to the end. For example the web address for an active site would look like this: www.ogpiugj.com/joomla
Upload the files to the website. This is done just like uploading a normal web page. Most web hosting companies will have an on-line FTP client that is used for uploading files.
