Junk mail is everywhere. It's in credit card offers mailed to your home, in sleazy spam sent to your email inbox and on the phone when a telemarketer calls. You get on mailing lists because when you subscribe to a magazine, sign up for a credit card, fill out a registration form or even give money to a charity, your personal information can be sold to a direct-marketing company.
Register for the Do Not Call list at DoNotCall.gov (see Resources).
Register only at websites you trust. When you do register at a website, don't providing your mailing address; often this information, as well as your phone number, is requested but not required.
Register for DMAChoice.org (see Resources). This website, run by the Direct Marketing Association, allows you to opt out of all mailing lists of companies that are members of the association. Note that you will, somewhat paradoxically, have to provide your mailing address to the site so that you can be placed on the opt-out list.
Don't fill out any registration forms or warranty cards, either online or through the mail. The vast majority of these are optional and exist only so that you can be sent further offers that you don't need or want.
Ignore junk mail you receive.
Decline to fill out a change of address form if you move.
