Scaffolding is common on construction sites, but it is used for other purposes, such as event staging and house painting. Scaffold construction and use is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and there are several safety regulations that all users should comply with.
- OSHA says that the base of scaffolding should be a stable surface such as the ground or a concrete foundation. Placing scaffolding on loose bricks or stacked concrete blocks is dangerous and in violation of the federal safety codes.
- The University of Chicago recommends training all employees that will be using scaffolding on safety laws and procedures.
- An OSHA-certified inspector should be allowed to inspect the scaffolding at least once a month to ensure that all safety laws are being followed.
- Employees working on a two-story or higher scaffolding configuration should wear a safety harness. Ladders should never be used on scaffolding. Tools and equipment should be kept away from the edge of scaffolding to prevent them from falling.
- The University of Oregon recommends using guardrails when a worker is on scaffolding that is 4 feet or higher from the ground.
