A lot of electrical power every year is used up by workplaces and offices around the country. The office is an important place, and most people spend at least a third of their weekday there working at their jobs. Therefore, by installing more efficient lighting in offices, businesses can not only become more environmentally friendly, but they can also help cut costs, enabling them to increase their profits in the long run.
- Incandescent lights are the standard light globe that you think of when you think light bulb. They are the cheapest light fitting that you can get, but unfortunately also inefficient and short lived. Their short lifespan (800-1,000 hours) means they require regular maintenance and replacement.
Fluorescent lights are recommended if an area needs to be lit for a long time. It is efficient and has a long life (8,000-16,000 hours). It is more expensive than an incandescent bulb, but its increased efficiency and lifespan more than make up for the extra cost.
Halogen lights are the middle ground between fluorescent and incandescent lights. They are about twice as efficient as an incandescent bulb but more expensive. The downside is they are low voltage and usually require a transformer to power. They are usually used for decorative purposes and aren't always practical for large scale use in an office. - You can vary the level of lighting in your office to reduce the amount of energy that it uses. The level of light required depends on the type of tasks being performed in the area--a corridor may require lower lighting than a work station or cubicle.
The main office area with all the cubicles needs to be well lit at least 8 hours a day so employees can do their jobs. However, rooms like meeting and board rooms need only be lit when in use, therefore, they should be kept unlit until needed. Also, corridors don't typically require as much lighting as work areas, so you may be able to decrease lighting, but only to a safe level. - In general, to make your office more energy efficient, you should maximize the use of natural daylight in the office. This could take the form of installing large windows so during the day there isn't a need for many lights. Also, using energy efficient lamps and control technology will contribute to saving you energy costs.
Another way of cutting electrical costs in your office is to "delamp." This involves removing a fluorescent tube from your fluorescent fittings where lighting levels are higher than are required by government standards. However, when doing this, you should ensure that lighting still remains relatively uniform throughout the office.
