A federal tax identification number, also known as an employer identification number or EIN, is a nine-digit number used to identify a business for tax purposes. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issues these identification numbers to businesses upon request when a business is established. Applying for a federal tax identification number is free and easy, and the IRS offers several ways to get your number.
Apply for a federal tax identification number by fax. Complete your SS-4 form in its entirety and fax it to the IRS. Before faxing your application, be sure you have provided a return fax number so you can receive your federal tax identification number via fax within four days.
