From learning the basics of a camera to building your portfolio, this is a guide I wrote for those who want to learn how they can become a pro at photography. Finding that special streak in creativity and advertising your business is very important from the get go, so why not start out the right way?
Start compiling your portfolio: You can begin to create your portfolio from the pictures that you have already taken. Make sure to use a program like paint.net to create an original signature to add to the bottom of your photos but make sure it is very small so it doesn't disrupt your photo. This is just to show you are the owner of the photo and you hold exclusive rights to this photo. Go to the Arts and Crafts store in your area to purchase a photo book that you can add all your pictures and decorations.
Buy a simple camera: Most people think you need to purchase an expensive camera to start photography, but to tell you the truth- that's not the case. It is all about creativity and in a sense, art. First, you need to purchase a simple camera that you can play around with until you get better at taking pictures. Learning to use light techniques and shutter speeds of your camera is crucial. This will give you more control of the overall outlook of the picture you have taken. For example, you can take a picture with a blurry background and focus the subject correctly so it stands out better. When you think you are ready though, you can purchase a much better camera that will suit your needs.
Yes, craigslist: Once you have good equipment like a really nice camera and a tripod as well, you can start posting on Craigslist. Offer your services at a very low price to start out. Just let everyone know in your add that your trying to expand your portfolio, so you're doing a special discount package. In this economy, everyone is looking for a good deal. You can either do this in the wedding sections or self portraits. I suggest waiting until you do a few self portraits from people and acquire references from people before you perform wedding photography. After all, the bride may be very hesitant to hire someone with no prior wedding references or any at all in this case.
Do your research: Before you take a dive into photography, you must learn the definitions and meanings of photography terms so that way you know what you are doing. Also, this will open a door for you into self teaching so you will get a good habit instead of going to school for it. I believe self teaching is much better because you learn on your own time and pace as well. Try searching on Google "photography definitions and meanings" and you will see there is a lot of good information to offer.
Build your references: The best place to build references is on Google Business. Once you get legit (read my other article on how to start a small business), you can add your photography business onto Google so that way it will come up number #1 in the search engine. Or almost number one, so to say. Once you get a few portraits of people (try to start out for family and friends) you can ask them to leave a review for you on yelp.com. This in return, will build reputation and trust for future clients.
