Picking out pallet racking for your warehouse may seem a confusing task if you have not been exposed to a warehouse environment. If you need racking, but don't know how to go about it, relax. I have got you covered. This will make it EZ.
Select the upright depth that best meets your needs.
Example: If you are storing materials on a standard size pallet (40"W x 48"L) then the upright depth would be either 42" deep or 44" deep. Both of these depths allow the 48" long pallet to catch the front and back beam, with an extra amount of pallet over lapping the beams. If you are hand stacking on the racking, then 36" deep or 48" deep uprights are other common sizes.
Select the upright height that best meets your needs.
Example: If your warehouse has a ceiling height of 25 feet, but your forklift only has a lift height of 12 feet, then your uprights should be in the 12 foot high range. Naturally, if you are planning to use a taller lift in the future, then you could use an upright closer to 20' high. Also calculate the height of the materials you are going to store on the top level. If you have a 25' high ceilings and are using 20'H uprights, with a pallet that is 5' high, you will need to lower your top beam height to accommodate the pallet height, plus the required clear distance from your materials to the ceiling.
Keep in mind that some municipalities have rules requiring a minimum clear distance from the ceiling to your racking. Check for local fire & city requirements.
Select the beam length that best meets you needs.
Example: If you are storing materials on a standard size pallet the most common beam length used is 8 foot long. This size beam allows room for 2 pallets per beam level, with extra room for overhang off of pallets, and maneuvering of pallet onto & off of beams. If you are storing longer materials, 9 foot & 12 foot beams are also common sizes.
Answer the following questions to help determine your storage needs.
What are the items you are storing?
What is the weight of the items you are storing?
What is the size of the items you are storing?
What is the height of your warehouse ceiling?
How high will your forklift lift?
Will the items be hand stacked on the racking, or will they placed in the rack using a forklift?
Are you placing the items on a standard size pallet (40"W x 48"D)?
Now that you have determined the types materials you are storing & your warehouse capabilities, you can select the size & capacity of your racking.
Decking your racking. There are several types of common decking available. Wire decking is the most popular type, and comes in sizes to fit your uprights & beam configuration.
Example: If your rack is 42" deep, and your beams are 8 foot long, then you would use a 42"D x 46"L wire deck. It would require 2 wire decks per beam level. The combined deck length equals 92", this is the proper length for an 8' foot long beam. Another common decking solution is 4 foot wide x 8 foot long particle or press board. This used in conjunction with 2"x4" boards that are cut to fit in the beams and run from the front to back beam.
Select the beam capacity that best meets you needs.
Example: If you are storing materials on a standard pallet, and your materials weigh 1,500 lbs + the 40 lb weight of the pallet, and you will be storing 2 pallets per beam level, then your minimum beam capacity would need to be 3,080 lbs per level. Beam capacity are rated by the beam manufacturer, and are available to the public.
