Team communication is essential for a successful team dynamic. Everything begins and ends with communication, so it is important to foster healthy team communication. Communication is both verbal (actual words) and non-verbal (body language, facial expressions and visual aids). Creating effective team communication will require the usage and agreement of both forms of communication.
Use questions in your next meeting, instead of lecturing. Team communication needs to be prompted by the leader moving out of the way and allowing the team to feel the freedom to express thoughts. Assign a facilitator, hand him or her a list of questions to ask the group. Assign a person to take notes. Allow the team members to share freely in response to the questions being asked.
Play team games. Brain storm the objective you want to achieve from playing team games. Know the point of the game before creating the game, such as working together, listening skills or interpersonal communication skills. Design the game in such a way that everyone is required to be involved. Create the game with other leaders to ensure that you get the result you are looking for. After playing the game, be sure to have a time of discussion and teaching to drive home the point.
Create a focus group within your organization. Select one person from each department or segment of your business, team or organization to represent that particular group. Have the focus group meet once a week to discuss various focused areas. Ask pointed questions and allow the team members to discuss their ideas, opinions and thoughts. Listen closely, and when there is an area you want more information about, ask more questions to facilitate effective communication and understanding.
